The Good Old Days in Tainan Chuang Mei Theater

Chuang Mei Theater, the only remaining movie theater in Taiwan that still uses hand-painted film posters, is a must-visit attraction for many nostalgic film lovers. In addition to preserving the retro atmosphere, the theater also hopes to continue passing down the essence of Taiwan’s old-school theater culture to future generations. Regarded as a “national treasure” with more than 50 years of experience, Mr. YEN Chen-Fa is Taiwan’s one and only professional film poster painter and currently paints posters for Chuang Mei Theater. Born and raised in Tainan, Mr. WU Yu-Tien is the third-generation owner of Chuang Mei Theater. Both guests made a special trip to Hong Kong for this year’s Taiwan Arts Festival to share this dying art form and show how to infuse new life into movie theater traditions in a culturally creative way. During the event, Mr. Yen also hand-painted the key visual design of this year’s Taiwan Arts Festival on the spot, hopes that the warmth of the Taiwanese people can be passed on to their friends in Hong Kong.
