Formosa Oolong Tea was once the jewel of Formosa, a major export, and a symbol of taste to the western world. In the 1920s, ordering a cup of Formosa Oolong Tea at a New York restaurant was a sign of sophistication.
Postcards from a century ago show remnants of packaging styles of Formosa Oolong Tea. As Ukiyo-e appeals to the longing for tea and exoticism in the western world, it also turned what was regarded ordinary to a powerful artistic influence.
