La Peintre, Yu-Lin

Screening: 3:30pm
Close: 5:45pm

Performed in Mandarin, with NO subtitles │ 135 minutes

Born to humble origins, Pan Yu-Lin came of age when China underwent rapid modernization influenced by western science and democracy. Encouraged by her husband Pan Zanhua, Pan seized the chance to be one of the first Chinese females to study fine arts in France, spending almost a decade studying drawing, painting and sculpture. The cornerstone of her western training was life drawing; she excelled at figure painting, which foreshadowed her signature mature works of female nudes. However, her paintings of nude females were a challenge to the cultural norms in the 1920’s China and generated much controversy in the art scene in the early Republic years. To pursue independent visual language, Pan traveled to Paris again in 1937. Over 40 years in France, Pan successfully established herself as a “warrior of beauty”, leaving behind a legacy of art that represented the pride and passion of an independent woman.

Opera La Peintre, Yu-Lin allows the audience to discover Pan’s story from studying at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, studying in Paris, returning to Shanghai to teach, and the uproar caused by the use of nude models.

Composer Nan-Chang Chien, playwright An-Chi Wang, French director Juliette Deschamps, and conductor Wing-Sie Yip, under the auspices of the Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra, have put the legendary life of Pan Yu-Lin onto the musical stage.
