Glamorous: Peking Opera Crossing Over to Modernism
A Western Interpretation of Taiwanese Musical Classics
Wu Hsing-Kuo and Contemporary Legend Theatre will perform a modern Peking opera adaptation of Waiting for Godot, a western classic, for the Festival. Led by Wu Hsing-Kuo and Chien Sheng, the performance breaks the structure of a traditional Peking opera with a dash of dark humor, featuring the traditional techniques of singing, reciting, acting and martial arts performing. Ma Pao-Shan, the founding artist of Contemporary Legend Theatre, a director of the GuoGuang Opera Company, will play as Pozzo, a tyrannical plutocrat who tortures his slave, Lucky, by whimsical commands such as thinking or dancing. This interpretation of Waiting for Godot shows the full glory of theatrical form and rhythm, fueled by detachment and ridiculousness but is nevertheless funny. It unveils the hidden Zen and philosophy to the audience through laughter. Wu Hsing-Kuo and Chien Sheng, two leading actors of the play, improvised a few lines of Peking opera during the press conference to demonstrate their adaptation. Moreover, Taiwan Culture Festival will cooperate with Zuni Icosahedron to present you In Search of Lost Time, a Freespace play, in which the brilliant Taiwanese Peking opera actress, Wei Haimin, will reinterpret a western masterpiece through Peking opera singing.

With three tall mobile stage of puppet pageants, it invites the audience touring the stage to experience this glittering Ukiyo-e of Taiwanese meeting the West. With exquisite subtle feminine emotions, Ho presented the splendid multicultural contemporary Taiwan. When speaking of rebuilding New Paradise of Silent Island in Hong Kong, Ho said ‘I draw my inspiration from Taiwanese mainstream phenomena and sub-cultures. The beauty of Taiwan lies in its inner cultural contradictions.'
STAGE, the photo exhibition, is a classic series of Shen Chao-Liang's works telling stories of vaudeville troupes and their truck theaters. When night falls, these ordinary trucks will transform themselves into sparkling theaters. Through time and efforts, Shen have captured the very unique rural Taiwan through the photographer's lens, a refined combination of the real and surreal creating the unique Taiwanese beauty.
Multicultural Voices: Home-bound Music with Oceanic Melodies
New generation Taiwanese music goes beyond words and languages, getting back to the core musical essence. These young musicians expressed and recorded the feelings of contemporary Taiwanese in their unchained music content. To bring to you the charisma of multicultural Taiwanese music, the Festival has invited the Sheng-Xiang & Band whom is famed for their brilliance in creating music based on local Taiwanese concerns; aboriginal singers Sangpuy and ABAO (Aljenljeng) passing on their traditional culture through creating music with their month tongue across genres and pop rhythms.
Awarded with the Jury Award of the 2017 Golden Melody Award, Sheng-Xiang & Band, who have a long history with social movements, base their music with a touch of modern western tunes, forming a new genre for Taiwanese folk music. Sheng-Xiang, the leading vocal of the band, plays with his tailor made six-string yueqin banjo, which deepens the depth of Going Away, Not Leaving, a song from their latest album, Village Besieged. We are honored to invite an icon of Hong Kong indie-band scene, the leading vocal of the legendary Black Bird, Lenny Kuo; these two home-bound musicians will perform together for the very first time!
It is the first time that Taiwan Culture Festival works with Freespace Happening, an event conducted by West Kowloon Cultural District, and in Sangpuy and ABAO will play for Hong Kong audience. Sangpuy's voice is a dialogue between a modern tribal young man and an ancient soul, as Ma Shih-Fang put it, ‘His songs are the gentle wind blowing throw a mountain blossomed with cogon grass', which defines him as the voice for the generation of Taiwanese music. ABAO (Aljenljeng) is a singer from the Payuan tribe; with his blissful voice, ABAO combines different genres music with pop tunes, singing them in his mother tongue, passing on their traditional culture through innovation, adding a new spirit into the ancient tunes. Even if the audience don't know the Payuan language, they are still astounded and moved by ABAO's emotion-conveying songs!
Celebrating the fifth anniversary of the eslite bookstore in Hong Kong, the Festival brings you to a sleepless illusive journey of arts and culture, holding on to the never asleep spirit pioneered by eslite. In honor of this spirit, the Festival conducts The Night of Dark Circles, which is composed with a series of musical performances, lectures, movies and installation art. In the name of love, lectures will be given by Tsui Shun-Hwa, a talented young Taiwanese poet, Lee Ming-Tsung, author, Yeh Shan, writer; and two Hong Kong artists Tang Siu-Wa, writer, Lau Zi Wan, poet. The night-time cinema will play classic romantic movies such as Blue Gate Crossing, Cape No. 7, When Love Comes as well as Wei Te-Sheng's latest work 52Hz I Love You. We believe this event will prove to be a feast for the eyes, the ears and the tongue.
Twin Cities Chronicle, a play conducted by a group from Tainan and a Hong Kong Theatre Space, will be performed in Hong Kong after its first success in 2016 Tainan Arts Festival. The play is the joined effort of Hsu Chen-Ping, a director form Tainan, whose most well know work is Eternal Summer, Cheung Fei Fan, a prominent Hong Kong playwright, who is well-loved by theatrical and TV audiences; more importantly, it is the tale of two cities. The director, Yu Chun Kau, divides the stage into two, and flight attendances of China Airlines will guide them to their seats, allowing them to choose between Hong Kong and Tainan, enabling different angles and experiences based on the two cities. China Airline offers a special discount to the audience of this play.
